The three Indians taking part, including top men’s seed Harinder Pal Sandhu, have ensured a medal each in the squash event of the Asian Beach Games which made a delayed start because of rain in Phuket, Thailand on Thursday.
Squash is making its debut in what is the the fourth edition of the Games where, in all, competitions are being held in 26 disciplines. After the wash out on the Wednesday, rain was no barrier yesterday. A heavy shower did occur just before the start of the matches but that did not dampen the spirits of the players or organisers as play eventually resumed subsequently on the outdoor courts at the scenic Karon Beach.
Aside from Harinder, India’s other two representatives were Kush Kumar and Aparajitha Balamurukan. All of them will feature in the last four matches which will be held on Saturday after a day’s rest onFriday. The event is being conducted on a novel 7-point-best-of-3-games format and matches were exciting with the leading seeds finding no problems in progressing. The event also proved a major tourist draw with the show happening on the beach.
The squash event received 15 entries on the men’s side and nine in the women’s section. Entries were restricted to a maximum of two per nation per category. Players have come in from China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, India, Philipines, Pakistan, Thailand, Iran and Qatar.
An additional interest for the Indian squash squad is that Harinder, who was part of the Indian men’s team which won the gold medal in the Asian Games in Incheon was given the honour of being the flag bearer for the Indian contingent at the opening ceremony, according to Cyrus Poncha, the Technical Delegate for the squash event in the Games.
