The Asian junior team squash championship gets underway in Malaysia on Wednesday
India has sent a relatively fresh squad of mostly new comers for the Asian Junior team squash championship which is to be held in Kuala Lumpur from January 28 to February 1.
Only Kush kumar and Velavan Senthil Kumar in the boys’ section and Harshit Jawanda Kaur in the girls’ section have experience of playiing in this championship before. The other five, all debutants, in the Indian squad are Sandeep Ramachandran, Yohan Pandole, Akanksha Salunke, Adya Advani and Sunaina Kuruvilla. National coach Cyrus Poncha and Surbhi Misra are the officials accompanying the team. “This is a team for the future. We are hoping that the competition will be an enriching experience to these players and help the country build up a good strong squad in the years to come,” said Poncha.
Both in the boys’ and girls’ sections, India have been seeded third. Pakistan and Malaysia are the top two seeds in the boys’ section and Malaysia and Hong Kong take that honour in the girls’ section.
As the last championship held in Seoul in 2013, India beat Hong Kong for the gold in the girls’ section while the boys settled for silver, losing to Paksitan 0-2 in the final.
In all this time fourteen countries are in the fray in the boys’ section and seven in the girls’ section.
