A promise nipped in the bud
In the US this month at the Bellevue, Washington where the World Men’s individual championship is on, the focus was on another champion Saurav Ghosal, particularly because he was the only Indian to get the past the first round. Saurav’s was a notable first round win over Australian Ryan Cuskelly, in fact a comeback effort over “a player who has been flying”, to use James Willstrop’s description of him. Saurav won 7-11, 11-8, 11-7, 11-3. The Englishman then himself stopped his “good friend” with least fuss in straight games 11-7, 11-7, 11-7. A promising start ended abruptly.
Harinderpal Sandhu who came through two rounds of qualifiers, failed (losing to Swiss player Nicholas Mueller 11-5, 1-11, 11-4, 11-9)
While Mahesh Mangaonkar did not cross the qualifying phase losing in the final round to Andrew Wagih (Egypt) 11-6, 11-5, 11-8.
Useful experience for Ravi and Ranvijay
Two minor tournaments in Malaysia under the Malaysian squash tour came in handy for two low-runged Indians to have some exposure. Ravi Dixit took part in both and levelled off at the quarterfinal stage. Seeded eight in Tour 8 held in Kuala Lumpur, Ravi went past David Clegg of Australia 11-5, 11-6, 11-8 in the first round and in the quarterfinal next, was unfortunate to confront the second seed Chi Him Wong of Hong Kong. Chi beat him easily 11-7, 11-7, 11-1. In Tour 9 held in Penang thereafter, Ravi, seeded seven here, once again started well beating Stuart Hadden of Ireland in straight games 11-4, 11-5, 11-8 but could not sustain the good form in the last-eight next. He was beaten by the fourth seed Adam Murrills of England though he had the consolation of plucking a game. The Englishman won 11-8, 11-4, 11-13, 11-5.
However Ranvijay who tried to get into the event in Penang via the qualifying phase did not cross the hurdle, losing the final round even if with a good fight to Hadden (Ravi’s first round victim) 5-11, 7-11, 11-5, 9-11
