Less than ten days remain for the South Asian Games to get underway in Guwahati and Shillong. Squash competition has been scheduled in Guwahati from Februry 6 to 10 and according to Competition Director Srikanth, “all arrangements are complete for the smooth conduct of the event.”
Four glass back courts have come up at the air-conditioned facility within the D.G. Baruah sports complex . A seating capacity to accommodate 250 people at one time is ready and with trial events to test the venue complete, the wait is now for the main action to begin.
All this seemed difficult at one stage when the work began some time as late as mid November. In fact officials had arranged for the four courts in Royal Global school as a back up venue just in case the main centre failed to meet the deadline. However the site developers SEARS Gold Finger Infrastructure & Projects Pvt Ltd, APEX Sports Surfaces India lived up to the trust reposed on them. Credit for this has also to go to the people who had planned it in the first place _ IOA, SRFI, Organising Committee SA, Games, Venue Development officers SA Games, Assam Squash Racket Association and SAI.
Mr Srikanth said five countries _India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal _ are in the fray in squash, which will have two competitions, team and individual. Four players per country in the team event and two per country in the individual form the draw in the competitions.
