PARIS: It was a tough start and India expectedly could do little against the top seeds and title-favourite Egypt and went down 0-3 in the opening Pool A league match here on Monday in the World women's team squash championship.
India is clubbed along with Egypt, New Zealand and Mexico and on paper the match against Egypt was expected to be the toughest of the three considering the array of star players the former champion team have. As it happened, Joshna was pitted against the number one player of the world, Nour El Shourbini. The ace Egyptian needed just 34 minutes to complete a straight game win though it must be said, Joshna did put up a brave front in the third game.
Dipika Pallikal Karthik showed little more fight, even plucked a game against Nouran Gohar, the world number three next. But in the end, Nouran had the last say, winning in four games. Despite taking the winning margin, the third tie was gone through in keeping with the league rules and Sunayna Kuruvilla came on but Omneya Abdel Kawy was too superior.
India plays Mexico on Tuesday.
The results: Egypt bt India 3-0 (Nour El Sherbini bt Joshna Chinappa 11-5, 11-6-15-13; Nouran Gohan bt Dipika Pallikal Karthik 4-11, 11-7, 11-4,11-9; Omneya Abdel Kawy bt Sunayna Kuruvilla 11-7, 11-7, 11-2)
