PARIS: After the disappointing start on the first day, India made some amends with a facile 3-0 win over Mexico on Tuesday in the World women's team squash championship being held here.
The win keeps alive India's hopes of progressing to the last eight phase from Pool A. Newcomer Sunayna Kuruvilla was the first to come to the court as per the day's order of matches and she gave India a flying start with a straight game win over Dina Anguiano Gomez. Her famed cousin Dipika Pallikal Karthik came next and made short work of Luz Lopez in straight games. The number one player Joshna Chinappa came on thereafter to complete the rout, beating Diana Garcia.
National Coach Cyrus Poncha, who is with the team, expressed happiness over the result. “Each Indian played a tight game, giving little away. After the loss to Egypt on the first day, this was a refreshing change,” he said.
The win today notwithstanding, India has a tough test tomorrow against New Zealand. A win there is mandatory for India to qualify.
The results: Pool A: India beat Mexico 3-0 (Sunayna Kuruvilla bt Dina Angiano Gomez 11-9, 11-9, 11-7; Dipika Pallikal Karthik bt Luz Lopez 11-4, 11-7, 11-7; Joshna Chinappa bt Diana Garcia 11-7, 11-8, 11-8.)
