POSTED DAE : Aug. 4, 2020
The World Squash Federation (WSF) Women's World Team Championship has been scheduled in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 15th – 20th December 2020. The championship is organized once every two (2) years, and countries have to register their respective teams for the championship.
The WSF and Squash Rackets Federation of India (SRFI) have been constantly monitoring the pandemic scenario. Considering the August 15, 2020 deadline the SRFI had requested the WSF for an extension which was not given.
Due to uncertainties regarding guidelines for the safe travel of our athletes and staff for national & international tournaments (yet to be obtained from the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports (MYAS) & Sports Authority of India (SAI)), coupled with lack of preparation time & match readiness of athletes, and after consulting our top players, the SRFI has decided to withdraw from the championship said Cyrus Poncha, Secretary General.
The SRFI is waiting for guidelines from the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports (MYAS) & Sports Authority of India (SAI) for international participations with top priority being safety and security of the players & staff for any international event.
As the situation develops and improves, SRFI in consultation with Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports (MYAS) & Sports Authority of India (SAI) will take necessary steps for resuming sport in the country in compliance with the SOPs that would be brought out along with any further development required for Squash.
We also wish to advise you that the Asian Junior Individual Champions 2020 has been cancelled by the Asian Squash Federation due to the pandemic. This event was to be held at Qingdao, China in June, which was then postponed to December 2020.
The Indian Squash Academy has resumed training for its elite athletes from today with SOPs as laid out by the Tamil Nadu Government / Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu.
